Research Interests
The foundations of quantum mechanics, relativity theory and thermal physics, the philosophy of space and time, and the role of symmetry principles in physics.

Author of Physical Relativity. Space-time structure from a dynamical perspective (Oxford University Press), 2005.

Career

Harvey Brown studied physics at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and did his graduate studies in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Chelsea College (later merged with King's College) at the University of London. From 1978 to 1984 he taught in the Philosophy Department at the São Paulo State University at Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. In 1984 he moved to the University of Oxford, where he taught in the Philosophy Faculty and was a Fellow of Wolfson College, until his retirement in 2017. He is visiting Pitt HPS in the fall of 2018 and teaching two graduate seminars in the history and philosophy of physics.
